The new vegetative cycle for the vines is at full steam. After pruning the vines during the Winter, at a time that vines show very little activity, with Spring comes bud break and flowering to the vineyards, bringing new green fresh colors to the Douro, while hiding the brown color of stones and soil.
This year’s shoots surprised me by the high number of bunches they have. This means that should the weather help during flowering, we will have another generous harvest. The photo shows a vine randomly chosen in the vineyard right in front of our winery. There is plenty of bunches. In general, only around 60% to 80% of the berries will be fertilized, and consequently became a grape. Slow wind and warm weather (around 25º C) are the best conditions for flowers’ fecundation.

O novo ciclo vegetativo da videira já decorre a toda a velocidade. Depois da poda durante o inverno, altura em que as videiras apresentam muito pouca atividade, a primavera traz a rebentação, pintando o Douro de verde e escondendo o castanho das pedras e da terra.
Este ano a rebentação surpreendeu-me pelo alto número de cachos por pampo ou rebento. Quer isto dizer que caso o clima ajude durante a fase da floração, teremos uma colheita generosa. A fotografia mostra uma videira escolhida ao acaso da vinha em frente à nossa adega. Há muitos cachos. Em geral, apenas 60% a 80% dos bagos serão fertilizados e, consequentemente, tornar-se-ão uva. Ventos fracos e temperaturas na ordem dos 25º C favorecem a ocorrência da fecundação das flores da videira. Mas isso é só daqui por mais 2 ou 3 semanas.
