The high levels or rainfall during the first quarter of this year left an indelible mark on our vineyards. You never know how much rain you want. On one side, if it rains profusely, the vines have good levels of humidity in the soil, bearing better the hot and dry Summer in the Douro. On the other side, too much rain provokes, among other things, landslides and terraces destruction. In the photo you can see that the vine from Quinta da Trovisca survived and is producing berries, but this terrace needs to be fixed.
S. João da Pesqueira has reached top temperatures of over 35º every day since the beginning of the week while in Quinta Vale d’Agodinho, which is by the river, two days ago at 7.00pm the teremometer showed 41º. The people in the Douro are used to these temperatures. So do the vines. The problem is that high temperatures without cooler nights, which is the case, makes it harder for the vines to maintain a balance in the repining of the grapes. We will get lower levels of acidity, reducing the freshness of the musts and later, the aging potential of the wines. The verison, or change of color of grape berries, started already in the vineyards by the river a couple of weeks ago and is slowing moving to the vineyards up in the hill.
In the next posts I’ll talk about ripening, yields, sugar and acidity levels of the berries so we can have a better idea of which quality and quantity to wait for this harvest.

Os elevados níveis de chuva durante o primeiro trimestre deste ano deixaram marcas indeléveis nas nossas vinhas. Nunca sabemos qual é o nível ideal de chuva. Por um lado, se chover muito, as videiras têm disponivel no solo bons níveis de humidade, permitindo aguentar melhor o Verão quente e seco do Douro. Por outro lado, demasiada chuva provoca, entre outras coisas, deslizamentos de terras e consequente destruição de socalcos. Na foto podem ver que esta videira da Quinta da Trovisca continua a produzir uvas, mas este socalco tem de ser reparado.
S. João da Pesqueira tem registado temperaturas máximas superiores a 35ª todos os dias desde o início da semana. Na Quinta Vale d’Agodinho, que está ao lado do rio, há dois dias, às 19.00 o termómetro marcava 41º. As pessoas do Douro estão habituadas a estas temperaturas. E as videiras também. O problema é que as altas temperaturas, sem noites frescas, que é o caso, fazem com que a videira tenha mais dificuldades em manter um equilíbrio na maturação das uvas. Obtêm-se níveis mais baixos de acidez, reduzindo a frescura dos mostos, e posteriormente, o potencial de envelhecimento do vinho. O pintor, ou mudança da cor das uvas, começou há duas semanas nas videiras mais próximas do rio e vai agora lentamente deslocando-se para as vinhas no cimo da montanha. Nos próximos posts vou falar de maturação, rendimento, açúcar e acidez das uvas, para que possamos ter uma ideia mais clara sobre o que esperar da qualidade e quantidade da vindima de 2010.
